12-Year-Old Arkansas Driver Follows Saturday Podium with Heat Win and Flag-to-Flag Feature Victory on Sunday
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Bronson Hawkins continued to turn heads behind the wheel of a dirt modified at Springfield Raceway, putting together an impressive weekend that included two heat race victories, a third-place feature finish and a dominant wire-to-wire feature victory.
The 12-year-old from Rogers, Arkansas, opened the weekend Saturday night by winning his heat race and putting himself in position to contend for the feature victory.
Hawkins quickly showed he had a car capable of winning, moving to the front and leading 11 laps of the feature. As the race progressed, however, track conditions deteriorated and the event turned into what could best be described as a dust bowl.
With visibility becoming increasingly difficult, Hawkins struggled at times to locate his marks and maintain the line that had allowed him to control the race early.
Despite the challenging conditions, Hawkins stayed composed and brought the car home in third place, finishing behind two significantly more experienced competitors.
For a 12-year-old driver still early in his development in dirt modified racing, leading 11 laps and finishing on the podium against veteran competition was another impressive step forward.
One day later, Hawkins made sure there would be no question about who had the car to beat.
Hawkins once again started the program with a victory in his heat race. That performance put him on the pole for Sunday's feature, and when the green flag dropped, the No. 28 went straight to the front.
This time, Hawkins never gave it back.
Starting from the pole, Hawkins led every lap of the feature on his way to a commanding victory at Springfield Raceway, completing a weekend that demonstrated both sides of his continued development as a driver.
Saturday required Hawkins to adapt, manage difficult track conditions and salvage a strong finish when circumstances changed around him. Sunday was about execution—starting up front, hitting his marks and controlling the race from green flag to checkered flag.
The victory adds to what has already been an impressive season at Springfield Raceway for Hawkins. Earlier this summer, he raced from deep in the field to a third-place feature finish, and on July 18, Hawkins broke through for a Springfield Raceway feature victory. Now, another trip to Victory Lane further demonstrates the progress the young Arkansas driver continues to make.
Perhaps even more impressive is that Hawkins is doing it at just 12 years old while competing against drivers with considerably more experience behind the wheel of dirt modifieds.
The weekend produced a simple set of numbers that tells the story: two heat race wins, 11 laps led on Saturday, a third-place finish, and a wire-to-wire feature victory on Sunday.
More importantly, it was another weekend of valuable experience for one of the youngest drivers competing at this level.
